Frequently Asked Questions & Useful Info

How much do you charge?

Our fee depends on a few key things: where your venue is, what you want us to do, and what day of the week and time of the year is it. It also depends on whether you’d like any of our extras. Please do get in touch with us and we’ll send you a personalised quote. We’re also really happy to talk your options through with you in advance. Email guerrillaceilidh@gmail.com (including your location and timings) or use our contact form.

How far will you travel for a ceilidh from Oxford?

We travel up to 60 - 90 mins for a ceilidh, dependant on the finish time. This means we work inside the Bristol / Birmingham / London circle. If your event is further away but you’re really keen to have us, please let us know and we’ll see what we can do!

What events do you play for?

Ceilidhs work really well as celebrations for birthday parties, for weddings or for having a great shindig just because. They can create great community spirit at local events and festivals and are a fun way for people who don’t know each other to get to know other a little bit more.

Help - I don’t know any dances!

That’s where the caller comes in! Our regular caller Steph is there to guide you through the dances and expects there to be guests who are brand new nearly every time. She’s there to guide you through even if you’ve never done it before.

How many guests do I need for a ceilidh?

40-50 is about a minimum number of guests for their to be at least one set dancing all the time (people like to take breaks and have chats in between dances). The maximum number of dancers it is comfortably possible to have dancing at any time is determined by your room size.

How big a room do I need for a ceilidh?

A medium sized village hall is normally about right for 80 - 100 guests, not all of who will dance at the same time. For example, a venue that takes 120 people standing, can probably fit around 70 people ceilidh dancing at a time with everyone else standing or sitting around the edge.

How much space does the band need?

We need about 2m x 3m minimum, but 3m x 4m or more is more comfortable. We have worked with all shapes and sizes, please talk to us if you think the band space is going to be too small.

What if I get the dances wrong?

Our caller Steph often says “getting it wrong is half the fun” - it’s a party! It’s ok for the dances to go a little wonky. In fact, it normally is funny when they do! All of that said, she’ll do her best to get you comfortable with the dances so you can do them to a satisfying level.

What if I have kids at my party?

One of the great things about ceilidh is that it can be really nice to do with all ages of a family together. Kids aged 8 + are normally confident enough to take part on their own. Kids aged 6 and under are normally not confident enough and are best off dancing with a trusted adult throughout, those two people counting as “one person” in the dance. Between the ages of 7 - 8, it depends on the individual child as to whether they are confident enough.

Can you include a guest who is a wheelchair user?

Yes - we’re really happy to adapt dances for anyone to make them accessible. Please talk to us about this and we’ll help tailor the event to include all your guests.

Ventilation

Dancers get hot! It’s good to pick a room with windows either side, or a door you can open.
